Step 1
"Prep wet hair with mousse from scalp to ends before you blow-dry, just to give it some hold," recommended the Orange Is the New Black star's hairstylist, Marc Mena. "Jackie's hair is really thick and long so if you have finer hair, add a volumizing spray to the roots to give hair a little more lift." Then, blow-dry hair smooth and straight. "You can do this on day-old hair too," noted Marc.
Step 2
Take one-inch sections, spritzing with hairspray (Nuance by Salma Hayek) and combing out to distribute the product before going in with the iron.
Step 4
"For a wave that pulls downward, hold your iron horizontally, not vertically." If you hold the wand vertically, "this will create a harsher curl instead of a wave," recommended the expert.
Step 5
Once you release hair from the wand, rewrap the section around your finger and using a duck clip, pin the curl in place on the head to cool. "This technique inspired by the ‘20s, when they used to set hair wet, is a modern way of extending the life of the look," said Marc.
Step 7
Once hair has cooled, let the wave down out of the pins and lightly comb out and tease underneath for a softened effect, giving it volume.
Step 8
To define the bend, place the duck pins on the inverted waves. "The longer you let it sit the better," said Marc.
Step 9
Remove pins and mist with a final touch of hairspray. (Marc likes to finish with L'Oréal Elnett.)
