Glossy Eyelids
As a makeup artist Suzie Kim sees glossy eye makeup in magazines and at shoots, and people always ask her if glossy lids translate in real life. To answer the question of wearable eye gloss, the makeup artist test drove three different versions; clear, gold and black. For the expert's verdict on how the glass-like makeup held up throughout the day, here's Suzie's glossy lids diary.
Day 1: Clear Eye Gloss
Product: MAKE Face Gloss
How I Wore It: I wore this clear gloss sans eye shadow. I used my fingers to lightly press the gloss onto my lids and then dabbed some more along my cheekbones.
Afternoon: Clear Eye Gloss
As soon as I turned on the air conditioner in my car, I realized that wearing my hair down would be challenging. My hair kept getting stuck to the gloss on my cheekbones.
Evening: Clear Eye Gloss
I noticed that the gloss didn't pop out much in broad daylight. Toward the end of the day during twilight hour was when my face and makeup looked the most luminous!
Final Verdict: Clear Eye Gloss
I loved how this gloss looked in photos and I will definitely wear it again, just not on a hot and humid day. I had minimal smudging on my bottom lashes from my mascara and eyeliner, but it was nothing a Q-tip couldn't easily fix. I think it will also be great for my skin during the colder months when skin is dull and dry.
Day 2: Gold Eye Gloss
Product: MAC Studio Eye Gloss in "Money Honey"
How I Wore It: I used a brush to apply the extra-sticky gloss over my eyeliner and all the way up to the brows to make it look extra dewy. I also dabbed a little along my cheekbone area.
Morning: Gold Eye Gloss
I remembered to wear my hair off of my face this time and my first early morning selfie looked really dewy and glowy!
Evening: Gold Eye Gloss
By the end of the day, I felt like most of the gloss had absorbed and didn't have a shiny look anymore. There was slight smudging on the bottom lash line, mostly from my eyeliner and mascara.
Final Verdict: Gold Eye Gloss
I loved how the gold shimmer gave the gloss an extra glow, but it also dried up toward the end of the day. It's best to wear this look for only a few hours at a time.
Day 3: Black Eye Gloss
Product: MAC Studio Eye Gloss in "Noticeably Noir" *limited edition color
Recommended Product: Jane Iredale Eye Gloss
How I Wore It: I layered this dark gloss on top of a smoky night time eye look. I applied the black gloss all over my top lid and over my eyeliner along the bottom lash line as neatly as possible.
Early Evening: Black Eye Gloss
Applying the black gloss was very tricky since it's easy to see accidental smudges. Regardless, I was excited to wear this black glossy eye out for dinner and drinks with friends.
Evening: Black Eye Gloss
After being out for a couple hours, I couldn't feel any difference on my eyes but I definitely could see the gloss starting to smudge a lot, mostly on the bottom—thank goodness I had my Q-tips.
Final Verdict: Black Eye Gloss
I loved this look because it's edgy but also very high maintenance. Next time, I want to try applying the gloss on the top lid only to keep it from getting too messy at the end of the night. It also took a super oil-based makeup remover and a lot of cotton pads to take all the gloss off.
