Rock Beginnings
David Bowie was born David Robert Jones in England on January 8, 1947. He formed his first band at the young age of 15 after learning to play the plastic saxophone.
Ground Control to Major Tom
In 1969, five days before the Apollo 11 launch, Bowie released "Space Oddity." It became an instant sensation and started his rock star rocket ride.
Ziggy Stardust
When the 1970s hit, Bowie launched his Ziggy Stardust stage show, where he wore eccentric costumes and bright red hair. The show and David quickly became a phenomenon in the UK.
The Funky '80s
With 1984's Tonight, Bowie collaborated with Tina Turner and Iggy Pop for the dance-centric album. He won his first Grammy in 1985 for Best Short Form Music Video for his iconic top ten hit "Blue Jean."
Goblin King
One of his most memorable film roles was his portrayal of the sexy and mysterious Jareth the Goblin King, from the 1986 cult classic Labyrinth.
Center Stage
David Bowie continued to rock sold out crowds well into his 50s. He's pictured here performing at MTV's Rock and Comedy Concert in 2002.
A Lasting Legacy
In 2006, Bowie was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, where he announced he would be taking a year off from music.
