After Prince Charles backed out of the In Kind event to attend a funeral, Duchess Catherine stepped in to take her father-in-law's place at the London function. Sans Prince William by her side, she looked confident, gorgeous and absolutely regal as she chatted with guests at her first solo engagement as a royal.

After visiting young cancer patients at a London hospital in September—including 9-year-old Fabian—the Duchess of Cambridge followed up with a personal letter to the boy, which was subsequently posted on his website. "Despite the enormously demanding course of treatment you are undergoing, I was so touched by your strength of character, and delighted to hear the news that one of your big sisters will be able to donate bone marrow to you later this year," she wrote.
Back in Black (Tie)
In mid-October, the newlyweds put on their finest (Wills in a tux and his missus in a red gown) for a good cause at St. James's Palace in London: a private dinner benefitting the Child Bereavement Charity, an organization the prince supports.
Doing Good
Wills & Kate are up bright and early for the Sept. 28 opening of the Oak Center for Children and Young People, a children's cancer unit at South London's Royal Marsden hospital. Incidentally, the prince's late mother, Princess Diana, chose this hospital for her first solo charity visit.

The exhibition would draw a record-breaking 600,000-plus visitors to Buckingham Palace during its three-month run.
