The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
On Christmas night 2008 in Philadelphia, James Joseph Cialella shot an audience member sitting near him during a screening for allegedly being too loud. Luckily, the victim was hospitalized in stable condition post-shooting. Cialella pleaded guilty to possession of an instrument of crime and aggravated assault.
Shutter Island
During a 2010 screening in Lancaster, Calif., a man was stabbed in the neck with a meat thermometer after asking a woman to silence her cell phone. According to reports, the victim complained about a woman who was talking on her cell, and the woman left and returned moments later to stab the victim.
Black Swan
In 2011, a 27-year-old man in a cinema in Latvia reportedly shot another man in the theater as the credits were rolling. The victim—who later died from his wounds—was allegedly targeted for eating his popcorn too loudly.
Boyz N the Hood
In 1991, some screenings of the film depicting the struggles of growing up in South-Central Los Angeles erupted in violence. One victim was critically injured and 11 were wounded around three Southern California theaters. A Chicago man was also killed and many others suffered injuries in at least 25 additional violent attacks associated with screenings of the film.
The Warriors
In 1979, numerous incidents of violence broke out at screenings of this movie about New York street gangs. A teen was shot and killed at a Palm Springs, Calif., drive-in during a showing of the movie. On the same night in Oxnard, Calif., an 18-year-old bled to death after being stabbed in the theater.
X-Men: The Last Stand
In 2006, at a theater in Maryland, a man later diagnosed with schizophrenia took a seat in the back of a movie theater with five other people. He reportedly ordered everyone in the theater to get down, and then fired four bullets into a victim seated in front of him.
Watchmen
During a Sunday evening showing in Eugene, Ore., a 24-year-old man shot and killed himself. No one else was injured.
The Godfather Part III
A brutal shooting at a 1991 screening in Valley Stream, N.Y., left one moviegoer dead and three wounded. Two teens were charged with reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon, among other charges.
My Bloody Valentine
A 2009 showing in Long Island turned deadly when a security guard allegedly stabbed a teenager who refused to leave the lobby. According to reports, the 24-year-old man was charged with second-degree assault for stabbing the 16-year-old victim.
Notorious
In 2009 in Greenboro, S.C., a screening of the biopic about rapper Notorious B.I.G. took a terrible turn when a 32-year-old man was shot twice in the abdomen and an estimated 700 people were evacuated. The victim underwent emergency surgery; the tragedy prompted the theater to cancel all scheduled showings of the film that the weekend.
The Signal
In 2008, during a nearly empty Sunday night screening in Fullerton, Calif., a man stabbed two victims in separate parts of the theater. He was later sentenced to 22 years to life in prison.
Get Rich or Die Tryin'
A Pittsburgh screening of the 50 Cent film in 2005 turned violent when a man was shot in the lobby. The 30-year-old victim died from the gunshot wound, and the film subsequently was pulled from the cinema.
Schindler's List
During a 1994 screening in San Diego, a man shot a woman in the back and law enforcement officials quoted the gunman saying he wanted to "test God" and protect Jews. The 45-year-old shooter was sentenced to six years in prison.
