1. Check Inside
You can tell a lot by opening up a bag. If the inside appears to be made of plastic, it's probably a fake. And most of the time, designer bags have a signature logo inside, so look out for that. For example, authentic Louis Vuitton bags, like Miranda Kerr's here, always have an interior stamp.
2. Sweat the Stitching
Take note! If you look closely at a bag, like Kristin Cavallari's Alexander Wang, all of the stitching will be perfectly aligned, with nothing unfinished. That's because luxury brands pride themselves in creating well-made, quality goods.
3. Do Your Homework
Headed to a designer consignment shop, or a vintage boutique for a coveted purse? Study that designer's website before you go, and look at its coloring, strap design and shape. That way, you'll have a better idea of what to look for in a truly authentic bag, like Michelle Trachtenberg's Coach.
4. Feel the Leather
Touch a handbag's leather to see if it's fake. If it doesn't feel buttery soft (you can bet Khloé Kardashian Odom's Hermes Birkin does), or have that hint of leather smell, it's probably not real.
5. Look at the Logo
A quick glimpse at a bag's logo can make the world of difference when shopping. If the logo is slightly askew, a different color than the zipper or glued on poorly, it's most likely imperfect, and not authentic. Lauren Conrad's Chanel, of course, looks perfect.
6. Notice Patterns
Are all of the patterns on track and consistent throughout? If not, you could be looking at an imposter. A monogram print should consistently match all over the bag. For example, in a Louis Vuitton bag, like Melissa Gorga's, the signature logos should all be facing the same way.
