Macaulay Culkin is not holding his breath for his father’s apology.
The Home Alone star, who shares sons Dakota, 3, and Carson, 2, with fiancée Brenda Song, recently revealed where he stands with his father Christopher “Kit” Culkin.
“I haven't spoken to him in, what would it be, about 30-something years?" Macaulay told Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson during the March 30 episode of Sibling Revelry. “He deserves it, too.”
He went on to note that Kieran Culkin and sister-in-law Jazz Charlton’s kids Kinsey Sioux, 5, Wilder Wolf, 3, as well as his other siblings, do not have relationships with Kit.
“He’s a man who—he had seven kids, and now he has four grandkids,” the actor added, “and none of them want anything to do with him.”
Despite the estrangement, Macaulay—who is also brother to siblings Shane Culkin, 48, Quinn Culkin, 40, Christian Culkin, 37, Rory Culkin, 35, and sister Dakota, who died in 2008—noted that he doesn't believe his father, now 80, feels any remorse.
“I would know, as a man myself, I would know that I f--ked up,” Macaulay explained. “I have more than an inkling that he does not feel that way.”
And the 44-year-old went on to describe how he imagines his father feels toward the ongoing feud between himself and his kids.
“We're wrong, and he's right,” Macaulay posited. “He's one of those narcissistic crazy people. Me and him were always butting heads. Like I said, he was a bad man.”
He emphasized, “One of my earliest memories of him was, ‘When I grow up, this is how I’m not gonna be with my kids.’”
Since his parents’ separation in 1995, Macaulay has been open about his strained relationship with his father because he took advantage of his career, previously detailing how he refused to give him time off.
“I just said to Kit, ‘Listen, I’m really getting tired and I’m not at school as much as I’d like to be; I really need some time off,” he recalled to New York magazine in 2001. “He said, ‘Yeah, sure,’ and the next thing I knew I was on the next set doing the next thing, and it just kind of clicked in my brain: ‘Okay. There’s basically nothing I can do to make this stop.’”
But while Macaulay faced issues with his father pertaining to work and generally how he “contributed to some of the unhappiness” in his life, the My Girl star emphasized that he did not let his relationship with his father define him.
“I got money, I got fame, I got a beautiful girlfriend and a beautiful house and beautiful animals,” Macaulay gushed of his life with his now-fiancée to Esquire in 2020. “It took me a long time to get to that place, and I had to have that conversation with myself and go, like, ‘Honestly, Mack? It’s not so bad.’ I want for nothing and need for even less. I’m good, man.”
