Mod Sun is healing from this not-so-happy ending.
Indeed, the "Bones" singer reflected on his one-year romance with Avril Lavigne, including how their 2023 breakup forced him to work on his mental health.
“We met through a truly awesome label making music,” Mod, 38, explained on XO Bunnie’s Dumb Blonde Podcast in a clip recorded last June and later posted on Nov. 6. “It was lovely. She was a true talent being around. I write and produce songs for other artists, so it was amazing coming up with an idea and seeing someone so f--king talented sing it.”
Indeed, the former couple were on a musical run during the height of the pandemic. Mod (real name Derek Smith) and Avril, 41, released their duet “Flames” in January 2021—eight months before they hard-launched their relationship on Instagram—and he co-wrote a few tracks on her Love Sux album that following year.
But their chemistry didn’t fizzle out after their studio sessions, as the two “dove in really fast” and got engaged in April 2022.
“We’re two different people, but I think I had a great influence on her,” Mod continued. “I think she couldn’t have had a more wonderful influence on me from the side of [helping me] grow up. Like now, I’m very secure of who I am, because I’ve been lost in the last three years of wondering, ‘Where do I fit in?’”
Though the “Karma” singer didn’t reveal what led to their split in February 2023, he noted that he started to work on his problems with understanding empathy. (Meanwhile, the “Sk8ter Boi” singer—who never publicly addressed the breakup—was quietly dating Tyga in March, but the two called it quits a few months later.)
“I pray every single day,” he explained, “and in those prayers, I’m like, ‘Just allow me to lead with empathy and be a shining light.’ My form of empathy is finally attached to being like, ‘Dude, you’ve got to get outside of yourself. When someone does you wrong, stop thinking f--k them, you did me dirty, and I’m out for revenge.’ It started being like, ‘Step in their position.’”
And as Mod continues to work on his spiritual health, he’s now realized he could no longer harbor those spiteful “feelings” for any of his exes.
“If we had done this talk three months ago, I might’ve been like, ‘F--k that person. I hope she hears this,’” the producer admitted. “But I’m now just like, ‘If I run into you? It’s all love. I hope you’re well.’”
