The Reiner family is facing the unimagineable.
Director Rob Reiner and his wife, producer Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their Brentwood home, apparently of stab wounds, a source close to the family confirmed to NBC News Dec. 14.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner," their loved ones said in a statement to Variety. "We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time."
Rob, known for directing films The Princess Bride, Stand By Me, A Few Good Men and This Is Spinal Tap, was 78. Michele, who met Rob during the production of When Harry Met Sally, was 68.
The filmmakers, who tied the knot in 1989, are parents to Jake Reiner, Nick Reiner and Romy Reiner. Rob also shared a daughter, Tracy Reiner, with late director Penny Marshall, whom he was married to from 1971 to 1981.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded to a death investigation just before 4 p.m. local time on Dec. 14. Once inside the home, officers discovered two decedents.
"The Robbery Homicide Division responded to the residence, which has been identified as the home of Rob Reiner," officials confirmed. "At this time, no further details are available as this is an ongoing RHD investigation, into an apparent homicide."
E! News has reached out to a rep for Rob and law enforcement and has not yet heard back.
Back in 2019, Rob—the son of Carl Reiner and Estelle Reiner—reflected on how Michele impacted the ending of When Harry Met Sally, written by Nora Ephron and starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal.
"I’d been married for 10 years, I was single for 10 years and making a mess of my personal life, in and out of relationships and not being able to make anything work," Rob shared on Couchsurfing, per People. "And when the first draft of the script, or the draft we were going to shoot, Harry and Sally don’t get together. They meet each other years later and walk their separate ways.”
“I met my wife while making the movie and we changed the ending and this is what we came up with,” Rob added. “Billy came up with some of this dialogue and that’s how we decided to end the movie, that they do end up together.”
